Hi vis is divided into three grades, all garments shall be marked with the EN ISO 20471 icon with the corresponding grade code.
The selection and use of hi-vis should always be based on a risk assessment of specific worker conditions and risks. The type of high-gloss workwear you need depends on the risk areas your workers will be in, which in turn will determine the amount of reflective tape and fluorescent material required.
Certification is based on the surface area of two types of materials, each with minimum requirements:
Hi-vis Class 1 Description: The lowest level of visibility
Items that generally qualify as Class 2 include Hi-vis sleeveless vests.
Hi-vis Class 2 Description: Moderate Visibility
Items that generally qualify as Class 2 include Hi-vis sleeveless vests.
Hi-vis Class 3 Description: The highest level of visibility
Items that generally qualify as Class 3 are the Hi-vis jacket and the Hi-vis vest with sleeves.
Â
Level 3 can be achieved in 2 ways:
1. Wearing a single piece of clothing that is rated 3
2. Wearing jointly certified products constitutes a class 3 based on the total area of fluorescent and reflective material
